Forked Society is a lens on the global shift from legacy systems to modular, self-sovereign alternatives.
It’s the move:

- From being born into a system… to choosing your own stack
At the heart of it is the Sovereignty Stack — a layered, open-source alternative to the brittle bundle of the nation-state:

- Identity → Self-sovereign IDs, onchain credentials
- Law → Smart contracts, community arbitration
- Education → Peer-to-peer learning, micro-credentials

This is the next operating system for civilization.
🚀 What Is Fork 0?
Fork 0 is our prototype — a live experiment in building the Sovereignty Stack in action.
Not a theory.
Not a brand.
A real-world attempt to live beyond the defaults.
We’re building:
- A modular governance layer
- A shared community treasury
- Contribution protocols
- Playbooks for digital-first, physical-second living
Fork 0 is where the movement becomes a mechanism —
Where opting out becomes opting in.
We’re not here to fix the old world.
We’re here to outgrow it.
📘 The Book (In Progress — and In Public)
I’m currently writing the Forked Society book — but this isn’t a private project.
It’s a way to document the global transition we’re living through — and to share ideas in public as they take shape.
The book explores:
- The collapse of centralized systems
- The rise of parallel institutions and sovereign individuals
- The many paths through the transition — from digital nomads and DAOs to startup cities and intelligent coordination networks
- Mental models for navigating a modular, opt-in future
- The mythos of the next civilization — one designed, not inherited
Some of it’s philosophical.
Some of it’s tactical.
All of it is about reclaiming agency — together.

I’m Sam Barton — founder, builder, and systems thinker.
Since the 2008 crash, I’ve been searching for better systems. That moment exposed how fragile the old world really was — and sparked my obsession with decentralization, sovereignty, and alternative models of organizing life.
I’ve built businesses, helped others modernize and digitize, and explored new models long before the tech could support them.
Now it can.
Forked Society is where I make sense of the shift — and build with those ready to fork what’s next.
